Swamy has previously alleged that the Soviet Union and Sonia Gandhi had colluded

Wednesday marks the 41st death anniversary of late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi, who died in a plane crash in Delhi in 1980. Sanjay, who was the son of then prime minister Indira Gandhi and brother of another premier, Rajiv Gandhi, was remembered by many Congress leaders on Wednesday.

However, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday used the occasion to target his bête noire, Sonia Gandhi, Congress president and sister-in-law of Sanjay. Swamy alleged the erstwhile Soviet Union had orchestrated the death of Sanjay to benefit Sonia. He tweeted on Wednesday, "Finally to benefit TDK, the Soviets fixed a leak in his plane and ended his life. The plane crashed near Ashoka Hotel but did not explode. Why?" TDK is an acronym that Swamy uses on Twitter to refer to Sonia.

Swamy has previously alleged that the Soviet Union and Sonia Gandhi had colluded. In 2019, he claimed Sonia Gandhi had urged Indira to attack the Golden Temple in 1984. He tweeted the operation at the Golden Temple "was a Soviet Union conspiracy to make us [India] more dependent on USSR for our defence against Pak".

Swamy has repeatedly alleged Sonia was an agent of the KGB, the erstwhile Soviet intelligence agency. In July 2018, Swamy even tweeted Sonia's father was a KGB agent, who had been recruited by the Soviet Union after he was taken prisoner in World War 2. He claimed the KGB “ensured Indira did not block Rajiv's marriage to her (Sonia)”.
