Despite India and Pakistan agreeing to adhere to their ceasefire agreement in February, shelling and firing was reported at the international border (IB) in Samba in Jammu early on Monday.
According to reports, Pakistan Rangers targeted a BSF patrol in Ramgarh sector at 6AM.
The BSF effectively retaliated against the shelling and firing coming from across the border. After that, things calmed down again.
In February, India and Pakistan, in an unexpected development, issued a joint statement to observe ceasefire at the IB and the Line of Control (LoC).
The move was hailed as an important development towards peace between the two countries.
In 2003, the two countries announced a ceasefire, which lasted for several years. The two sides also started talks on Jammu and Kashmir to find a solution to the issue. The talks, however, couldn’t proceed as general Pervez Musharraf, who was in power in Pakistan, had to leave office in 2008 after a movement by lawyers against him.
