Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of DMK chief M.K. Stalin, was on Friday declared the party's candidate for the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency in Chennai for the upcoming Assembly polls.
The DMK released its list of candidates for the 173 seats it is contesting on Friday. Stalin, the chief ministerial candidate of the DMK-led front, will be contesting from the Kolathur constituency again.
The DMK has nominated Sampath Kumar to contest against Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami in his constituency of Edappadi.
Stalin was quoted by The Times of India as saying the DMK alliance "is based on principles and not on number of seats". According to The Times of India, Aladi Aruna, Suresh Rajan, Kannappan and former speaker Avudaiyappan are other prominent DMK members to be fielded.
Stalin urged DMK members to regard "[former chief minister] M. Karunanidhi as the candidate in all the constituencies in the state and work hard for the victory".
Udhayanidhi was made chief of the DMK youth wing in 2019, marking his formal ascent to the party's leadership. Stalin had held the post of DMK youth wing chief from 1982 to 2017.

The DMK, out of power since 2011, is eyeing a comeback by dethroning the ruling AIADMK and has stitched up a rainbow coalition comprising the Congress, the Left, MDMK, VCK and other smaller outfits, apportioning them a total of 61 of the 234 seats at stake.
Since many of the parties including the MDMK will be contesting on DMK's Rising Sun symbol, the lead partner will be effectively in fray in 187 seats, Stalin added.
