The Members of the Parliament will have to shell out more from their pockets for having their delicacies from the canteen.

The new rates, announced by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, will come into effect when the Budget Session begins on Friday.

The new menu will offer as many as 58 food items—both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The cheapest item is chapathi costing Rs 3. While the price of a vegetarian buffet is Rs 500, a non-vegetarian buffet would cost Rs 700.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had said in January that subsidy on food served at Parliament canteen would be stopped.

With the subsidy coming to an end, the Lok Sabha Secretariat could annually save more than Rs 8 crore.

The Parliament canteen, which had been run the Northern Railway for the past 52 years, is now managed by Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).

The customers of the canteen who enjoyed subsidised food at throwaway price also included Parliament staff, members of parliamentary panels, ministries having their meetings in Parliament building and political parties holding press conferences.

According to an RTI reply in 2015, the Parliament canteen got an annual subsidy of Rs 14 crore every year, paid by the Ministry of Finance through Parliament.
