Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sounded an ominous note on the economic scenario in the country.

Rahul Gandhi spoke about the economy while participating via videoconferencing in a government function in Raipur, capital of Chhattisgarh, to mark the launch of Rajiv Gandhi Bhawans in all districts of the state.

In the video, Rahul said the media had made fun of him when he warned that the COVID-19 pandemic would have a severe impact on the economy. Rahul said the unorganised sector, which provided 90 per cent of employment in the country, had been “destroyed” by the government. Rahul warned “companies would collapse, one by one” when the moratorium on bank loans ends.

Rahul warned the government would not be able to provide jobs to the youth, noting such a scenario would be occurring for the "first time in India's history since independence". Rahul said if people did not believe him on this claim, they should wait for six-seven months.

Rahul said jobs would not be generated given the bleak situation of farmers and small and medium businesses.

On Wednesday, Rahul tweeted 2 crore jobs had been lost since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

"In the last four months, around 2 crore people have lost their jobs. The future of 2 crore families is in the dark. The truth about unemployment and destruction of the economy cannot be hidden from the country by peddling fake news and hatred on Facebook,” Rahul tweeted.
