Trouble mounted for the BJP government in Manipur after three party MLAs resigned and joined the opposition Congress and several allies withdrew support to the ruling coalition.

According to reports, the National People’s Party, which has four MLAs, withdrew its support to the government, leaving the Biren Singh government jittery. Adding to its woes, the lone Trinamool Congress MLA and an Independent MLA, who had extended their support to the BJP coalition, also withdrew their support.

After the 2017 Assembly elections, the saffron party, which had bagged only 21 seats in the 60-member assembly, managed to form the government with the support of the NPP, the Naga People's Front (NPF) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

The NPF has four MLAs while the LJP has one.

The Congress, which is the single largest party in the state, has 28 MLAs. However, after the 2017 elections, Governor Najma Heptulla invited the BJP to form the government.

The latest developments have reduced the BJP-led coalition's strength to 23.
