A Muslim family in Manohar Nagar of Gurugram filed a police complaint, alleging that they were physically assaulted after they participated in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to turn of lights for nine minutes on Sunday and light candles or diyas, expressing resolve to collectively fight COVID-19.
The family claimed that they were attacked because they decided to respond to the PM's call despite being non-Hindus.
According to the complaint, the accused arrived at the victim's doorstep chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and asked them not to participate in the activity or take videos.
"We have been living here on rent for six years and I work with a travel company in sector 37. Yesterday, when we were standing with mobile flash lights and making videos, they came shouting slogans. They tried to hit my mother with a chair and then threw bricks at us and hurled abuses, asking us to leave the city," Aatif Warsi, the complainant, said.
Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigation in under way.
"We got a call about the family being scared as they were attacked during lights out. They alleged harassment and the matter is being investigated. The accused have been nabbed for attacking and thrashing family," said official communication from Gurugram police spokesperson Subhash Bokan.
