The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a father-son duo for their alleged involvement in the recent communal violence and clashes in northeast Delhi.

According to police, Riyasat Ali and his son Liyaqat Ali used to work for suspended Aam Admi Party Councillor Tahir Hussain and were present at his residence on the day of violence at Chand Bagh. Another accused Tariq Rizwi was also arrested along with the duo.

Police said all the three were taken into custody after details emerged from the questioning of Hussain.

According to police, both Riyasat and Liyaqat were the organisers of the violence and had pelted stones and petrol bombs at the mob from atop the house of Hussain. Rizwi is said to be the manager of Hussain and had given shelter to the politician in his house in Zakir Nagar. Further investigation is underway.

Hussain was arrested on Thursday in connection with the killing of Intelligence Bureau (IB) official Ankit Sharma during the violence, and has been sent to seven-day police custody. The family of Sharma (26), who was found dead in a drain near his home in northeast Delhi's riot-hit Chand Bagh area, has accused Hussain of being behind the killing.

Communal clashes broke out in northeast Delhi after violence between anti-and-pro-Citizenship (Amendment) Act groups spiralled out of control. Frenzied mobs torched houses, shops, vehicles, a petrol pump and pelted stones at local residents and police personnel, leavingĀ  at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.

So far, Delhi Police has registered 690 cases and held nearly 2,200 people in connection with the violence.
