The MP asked those protesting against the CAA to talk to the government

East Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday condemned the violence in the city over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and said action should be taken against any party member, "whether Kapil Mishra or anyone else", who gave provocative speeches.

The MP also asked those protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act to talk to the government instead of indulging in violence.

"Whoever, no matter which party he belongs to, whether he is Kapil Mishra or anyone else, who gave speeches to provoke people, action should be taken against them," Gambhir told reporters in Delhi.

Gambhir was quoted by NDTV as saying, "Shaheen Bagh was a peaceful protest all this while. But [US President Donald] Trump is here and there are violent protests happening here—this is not fair. Right to peaceful protest is okay. But picking up stones is not. How can you stand with a pistol in front of a cop?" he added.

Congress leader Rajeev Shukla welcomed the statement by Gambhir. He tweeted, "Gautam Gambhir's statement is welcome. He has demanded stern action against BJP leader Kapil Mishra for provocative rhetoric... we need leaders like Gautam."

Gambhir has previously gone 'against' the BJP line. Last year, he criticised the assault on a Muslim man in Gurugram,apparently upsetting some BJP leaders.

Mishra, who had contested the recent Assembly polls on a BJP ticket, led a gathering in support of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Maujpur Chowk in the Jafarabad area on Sunday, after which violence erupted between rival groups.
