Union ministers to visit Jammu & Kashmir to 'educate' people on govt projects

This is the first visit by the Union ministers after the revocation of special status

Five months after the Union government revoked Article 370, members of the Union council of ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, Prahlad Joshi, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Jitendra Singh, Giriraj Singh, Renuka Singh, Anurag Thakur are expected to visit Jammu and Kashmir later this week.

According to an Indian Express report, the ministers will visit various districts of both Jammu and Kashmir from January 18 to 24 with the aim of informing people about the government policies initiated after the abrogation of Article 370. This is the first visit by the Union ministers after the revocation of special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The ministers will educate people about the schemes and projects being implemented or to be be implemented in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the Indian Express report, Home Minister Amit Shah wanted the Union ministers to visit Jammu and Kashmir to spread the word about the government policies launched for the development of the union territory.

On Tuesday, General Naravane, hailing the abrogation of Article 370, had called it a "historic step" and added that the move has disrupted the proxy perpetuated by the "western neighbour". He further said the move will help in the integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India.

Meanwhile, Lt Governor G.C. Murmu said the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is normal and added that people are participating in the development process. "Jammu, of course, was normal and the other part (Kashmir) is also normal. The people are cooperative and they have understood and are now participating in the development process," the governor had said.

"We are hopeful of restoring the normal communication channels in the coming days. We will see how it is going to be utilised and accordingly relax everything," Murmu said while speaking about the partial restoration of the internet services in Kashmir and 2G mobile internet services in five districts of Jammu region.
