Police issued notice to students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi on Tuesday asking them to not take out a march outside the campus premises to protest the amended citizenship law.

The notice has been issued under provisions of section 149 (preventing commission of a cognizable offence) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), an official said.

The students have also been warned that action will be taken against them if they disobey the notice issued by police, he said.

BHU students had organised a march from the campus' main gate to the Ravidas Gate to demonstrate against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

As soon as news of the scheduled march reached the police, Lanka police station in-charge Bharat Bhushan Tiwari issued the notice to prevent the march.

"To ensure that law and order is maintained, section 149 CrPC has been put in place and the students have been asked to not take out the march," Tiwari said.

"If the students fail to follow police's instructions, then action will be taken against them as per the law," he said.

IP university students stage protest

Students of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi on Tuesday held a protest against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia.

They were joined by their counterparts from National law University, Amity University and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology.

Manmohan Singh, an alumnus of IP University and who organised the protest, said around 100-150 students participated in the demonstration. "The right to protest is a democratic right. Using teargas and lathi-charging students who were sitting in the library and studying was uncalled for," he said.

FIR against Jamia students

The Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA) on Tuesday condemned the Delhi Police's action of filing an FIR against three Jamia Millia Islamia students in connection with Sunday's violence in the area around the varsity.

The FIR has been filed against seven persons, including former Congress MLA Asif Khan.

The other six accused persons have been identified as local politicians Ashu Khan, Mustafa and Haider, AISA member Chandan Kumar, SIO member Asif Tanha, and CYSS member Kasim Usmani, police said.

Rather than taking action against police officials who unleashed violence on the students, the Delhi Police has filed FIR against student activists of Jamia, the AISA said in a statement.

"From AISA, we want to state categorically that we cannot be silenced by these victimising tactics. We are fighting to defend our Constitution. We are fighting to save the secular fabric of India and the citizenship of Indian people," the student body said.

"The fight will only get intensified against today's rulers who want to divide the country on communal lines and who want to disenfranchise crores of Indians," it said.
