Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Friday lauded THE WEEK for its objectivity in reporting of events, and the divergence of views that are reflected in it.

Naidu was speaking after giving away the first TVR Shenoy Award for Excellence in Parliamentary Journalism to Vinod Sharma, Political Editor of the Hindustan Times.

The media, said Naidu, has an obligation to convey the proceedings of Parliament objectively and with all the seriousness with which the proceedings are conducted.

The award, which consists of Rs 1 lakh and a memento, has been instituted by the Prof. K.V. Thomas Vidyadhanam Trust in memory of TVR Shenoy, former editor of THE WEEK.

Sharma recalled that he had started Parliament reporting under Shenoy for THE WEEK back in the 1980s, and that he had enjoyed unhindered journalistic freedom, though often his views differed from that of the editors.

Delivering the commemorative address, former defence minister A.K. Antony described Shenoy as one of the finest journalists of all times.

The award jury was chaired by eminent writer Prof. Omchery N.N. Pillai.
