Nadda gives away first Mangalam Swaminathan excellence awards

Each award carries Rs one lakh, a memento and a citation in bronze

“People who win, perform big tasks very silently. I say silently because from politics, I understand the glitz well. But there are a lot of people who stay away from the glitz and contribute positively in a massive way,” said BJP's working president J.P. Nadda while giving the first Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan excellence awards.

The national award for excellence in journalism was conferred to Ranjana Narayan for her life time achievements. Narayan is presently a senior editor with Indo-Asian News Service. The national award for excellence in science reporting was given to V.D. Selvaraj, senior editor, Kalakaumudi, a Malayalam literary, academic and political weekly. 

The award for excellence in medical malpractice investigation was given to Kaunain Sheriff of the Indian Express for his serial stories on Johnson & Johnson. The award is given for exposing medical malpractices and mafia, killer drugs and over pricing. 

The awards are for the year 2019. Each award carries Rs one lakh in cash and a memento and citation in bronze. 

Another key national award—Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan National Award for Excellence in Art and Culture—was given to SPIC MACAY,  the voluntary movement dedicated to promotion of Indian classical music and culture in educational institutions. 

The award for excellence in the field of social service was given to Seva Bharati, Kerala for their work during the floods in the state. 

The awards were given by Nadda along with senior BJP leader M.M. Joshi at a function here.
