An on duty police sub inspector during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sardar Sarovar Project dam site at Kevadia in Gujarat committed suicide using a colleague's pistol.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nilesh Finaviya was on duty at the circuit house when he sought a pistol from colleague. Before anyone could realize, he shot himself on the temple and died on the spot. The PSI is survived by wife and two children.

Finaviya was posted in Navsari district but was part of the deployment during the PM's visit.

The deceased's cousin, Bhavesh, alleged that he was being mentally harassed by the seniors. There are reports that Finaviya had written a suicide note. However, it is reported that the letter went missing.

Modi was inspecting facilities near the Statue of Unity when the PSI shot himself dead.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat police had arrested a couple of activists from Kevadia on Monday evening ahead of Modi's visit. They were released only after Modi left for Gandhinagar.

One of the activists, Lakhan Musafir, said that their only demand was that the locals be given jobs when the development of the area takes place.

The BJP government in Gujarat had organised the programme to mark the water level in the dam reaching 138.68 meters. The day also marked Modi's 69th birthday.

However in Madhya Pradesh, a beneficiary state of the project, Public Relations and Law Minister P.C. Sharma held that the Gujarat government had disregarded the schedule given by the Narmada Control Authority. He alleged that the water was held at a level which should have been on October 15.

He held that holding the water to this level had caused artificial flooding in the districts of Dhar and Badwani.
