Modi tsunami in 2019 means no polls in 2024: MP Sakshi Maharaj

Sakshi Maharaj, the BJP MP from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, has been known to be a loose cannon for years. From glorifying Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi's assassin, to blaming polygamy among Muslims for the population growth in India, Maharaj has seemingly covered all bases.

However, on Thursday, Maharaj arguably outdid himself on topping the outrage scales when he claimed the 2019 Lok Sabha polls would be the last elections in India. Speaking at a meeting in Unnao, Maharaj appealed to people to vote in large numbers as “there won't be an election in 2024 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins this year's polls”. In an apparent bid to add heft to his words, Maharaj claimed, “I am a sanyasi who can foresee the future”. Maharaj also declared, “the Hindus have awakened”.

Maharaj, speaking in Hindi, claimed, “If there was a Modi wave in 2014, there would be a Modi 'tsunami' in 2019, which no power on earth can stop.” Dismissing the challenge posed by the entry of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into politics and the SP-BSP alliance, Maharaj said across the country, people were claiming, Modi hai to, Desh hai (If Modi is there, the country is there).

Responding to Maharaj's claims on the 2019 elections being the last, social activist Teesta Setalvad tweeted, “Vote Wisely and Well. The Regime is breaking the Law, the Constitution, Election Rules on Money Spending and the Media...”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal retweeted videos of Maharaj's controversial speech.
