There is an uneasy calm in Bulandshahr, which witnessed mob violence a month ago, but the situation has remained under control. In a major breakthrough for investigations into the Bulandshahr violence, the police arrested a key accused in the case early on Thursday morning.

Shikhar Agarwal was arrested from Hapur district by Bulandshahr police. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Confirming the arrest, ASP Atul Kumar said that Agarwal will be produced in court soon. In recent weeks, the police had arrested five others accused in the Bulandshahr violence, which left a police inspector, Subodh Kumar, and a youth dead.

After initial investigation, an FIR was lodged. The FIR, registered at the Siyana police station, names 27 accused persons and also lists 60 unidentified people.

The mob violence had broken out around the Chingrawathi police post area of Bulandshahr district after cattle carcasses were found strewn outside Mahaw village.

On January 3, the police had arrested local Bajrang Dal leader Yogesh Raj, a key suspect in the Bulandshahr case. The number of arrests has now exceeded 10 people.

The ADGP, Intelligence, had submitted a report on the Bulandshahr violence to state DGP O.P. Singh. The report has been forwarded to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

According to sources, the report says that the Bulandshahr violence was planned and there was a conspiracy to fan riots in the area.
