The islands—Ross island, Neil island and Havelock island—are to be named as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep respectively.
The new names will be formally announced on December 30 when PM visits the Andaman and Nicobar islands to mark the 75th anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose hoisting the national flag at Port Blair.
Bose had hoisted the flag at Port Blair, capital of Andaman and Nicobar islands, in 1943 as he belived that Port Blair was the first territory to be freed from British rule. The Japanese had captured the area during the time of the Second World War. It is said that Bose had suggested renaming the Andaman and Nicobar islands as Shahid and Swaraj dweep.
The Uttar Pradesh government had renamed several places across the state this year. Mughal Sarai was renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar, Allahabad as Prayagraj and Faizabad as Ayodhya.
