Senior orthopaedic consultant Dr Jacob Varghese said there are advanced medical facilities available in Australia to treat Commander Abhilash Tomy of Indian Navy, who suffered a back injury while participating in the 2018 Golden Globe Race. Varghese is a senior consultant and HOD of the orthopaedic department at VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi.

There are news reports that Commander Tomy may be shifted to western Australian port city of Fremantle, or Mauritius. However, Varghese said the initial reports from Amsterdam Island suggest that Commander Tomy has not suffered any grievous injuries.

Varghese further said the next course of action should be shifting Commander Tomy to a hospital which has expert orthopaedists, so that a detailed check-up can be done. The trauma centre at the government-controlled hospital in Fremantle has excellent facilities, he said. The next biggest hospital is Royal Perth Hospital, as Fremantle and Perth are neighbouring cities. If needed, he could be shifted to that hospital, Varghese said.

He added that the treatment available in hospitals in Australia are of high standards.
