“One who worked hard without taking rest is resting in peace here,” read the letters inscribed on the wooden coffin of late DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi. The words—Oivu edukkamal uzhaithavan, itho oivu eduthu kondirukkerean—was penned by Karunanidhi himself at least three decades ago.

These words, apt for a leader who tirelessly worked for the Dravidian ideology, was written in Tamil.

Earlier, in a moving tribute, M.K. Stalin had penned a poem for his father. “For once, shall I call you my father, my leader,” read the poem.

Amid cries of people hailing him as 'Thalaivar' (leader), the final journey of the DMK chief began on Wednesday evening. Slogans like Kalaignar pugazh vazhga vazhgavey (long live the glory of Karunanidhi) resonated in the air as sobbing family members accompanied the mortal remains of the late leader.
