A dental surgeon from Jammu has donated her alimony of Rs 45 lakh to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Kosh campaign.

Dr Megha Mahajan told THE WEEK that she started fighting a matrimonial case with her husband in 2011; she later decided to donate the alimony to Swachh Bharat Kosh.

''I thought this man, Modi, is doing so much for the country and decided to give my entire money to his noble cause,'' Mahajan told THE WEEK. '' After I received the money, I transferred it to the Swachh Bharat Kosh account.''

Mahajan said she was happy that she has contributed to a cause aimed at making India a better place to live for its people.

Born in Gandhi Nagar, a posh locality in Jammu, Mahajan said her family has always supported her.

''I studied in DPS Jammu and then did my BDS from Himachal,'' she said. '' I then decided to work as a volunteer in Haridwar.''

The young dentist, who was in Jammu to attend a religious function, refused to speak about her former husband and said she was happy with her life.

She said she decided to donate the money to a noble cause to negate the impression that women extort money under the pretext of alimony.

She said her parents raised her with good values and taught her to support good initiatives.

She said she wants the Swachh Bharat committee to launch similar programmes for clean water and air. "Let us see whether they consider it," she says. Mahajan's generous act has been widely hailed on social media.
