After days of speculations, Tripura's BJP leader Biplab Kumar Deb has finally been elected as the chief minister of the state, Union minister Nitin Gadkari told media on Tuesday. "Biplab Kumar Deb has been unanimously elected leader of Tripura BJP legislature party," said Gadkari. The newly-appointed chief minister said Jishnu Deb Burman will become the deputy chief minister of the state. "Jishnu Deb Burman will work as the deputy CM of Tripura," said Deb addressing the media.

The CM decision came in a meeting of the newly-elected MLAs of BJP-IPFT alliance on Tuesday in the presence of central observers Gadkari and his colleague Jual Oram.

"The new BJP ministry in Tripura would most likely assume office within this week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party's national president Amit Shah, several central leaders and Chief Ministers of various states are likely to be present during the swearing-in ceremony, date of which will be finalised after getting the Prime Minister's schedule," Tripura BJP vice president Subal Bhowmik had earlier told the media.

Meanwhile, in the wake of sporadic "post-poll violence" in the state, Section 144 has been imposed in several areas, prohibiting the assembly of four or more people. Two days since the Tripura Assembly election results were announced, the CPM and BJP have blamed each other for the clashes perpetrated by their supporters.
