In a major development in the healthcare sector, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved Novo Nordisk India's latest drug that aims to treat the burden of fatty liver disease in the country.

Novo Nordisk India introduced Wegovy (semaglutide injection 2.4 mg) for the treatment of fatty liver disease and claims to be the first and only GLP-1 RA to be approved both globally and in the country for the treatment of noncirrhotic Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH).

The injection is used for the fatty liver treatment in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis along with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, Novo Nordisk India informed.

What is MASH?

It is a liver disease that develops due to excess fat buildup in the liver, causing chronic inflammation and liver damage. Conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol increase the risk of developing MASH.

"This approval is an important milestone, giving doctors and patients a new option for people at risk of MASH while also helping to address obesity and related heart and metabolic diseases," said Novo Nordisk India MD Vikrant Shrotriya.

Symptoms of MASH

The following are some of the signs to identify MASH as per the Cleveland Clinic.

  • Fatigue
  • Discomfort or pain in your upper right belly
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Muscle weakness or muscle loss
  • Swollen belly or legs
  • Yellowish tint to your eyes and skin (jaundice) as the condition worsens
