Malayalam actress Parvathy Krishna recently sparked a digital firestorm following her face yoga tutorials, where she claimed the practice can fundamentally alter facial structure through specific techniques. While her videos quickly went viral, they also met with significant backlash, as critics labelled the claims 'misleading.' The controversy has reignited a heated online debate: Does yoga for the face really work?

Many users argued that there is no scientific evidence supporting such drastic facial changes through yoga alone.

Meanwhile, the actor responded by stating that she is a certified face yoga expert who has helped numerous clients through her practice. Her Instagram post also garnered support from followers who vouched for her claims and shared their own positive experiences.

What is face yoga?

Face yoga combines facial exercises, massage and acupressure to strengthen tone and lift facial muscles.

How does face yoga help?

"Face yoga is a specialised self-care practice designed to rejuvenate the complexion by systematically softening, stretching, and strengthening the facial muscles. By alleviating deep-seated tension and stress, these techniques not only relax the face but also provide a natural lift, helping to smooth away the visible signs of worry and fatigue.

Although several benefits of face yoga exist, it is important to note that limited research supports these claims.

According to Danielle Collins, face yoga expert, it helps to lift and firm the muscles under the skin, which smooths lines and wrinkles.

"Massage helps to boost circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, and release tension. Acupressure techniques boost circulation and relieve stress, which can aid in preventing headaches, releasing sinuses, and enhancing the quality of your sleep.”

A 2018 study revealed that facial exercises may boost your mood and facial expression.

Face yoga benefits:

*control face muscles

*reduce teeth grinding

*improve symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

*improve face symmetry

*reduce sagging and dark circles under the eyes

A 2021 review found that facial exercises may help improve the strength and appearance of your face. However, the current research is limited, and more studies are required in the field.

Also, note that face yoga cannot change your fundamental bone structure, but it can significantly alter the aesthetic appearance of your face by targeting muscles, skin, and fat distribution.

Your face contains over 50 muscles. Like any other muscle, they can grow through resistance training. For example, exercises like the "cheek uplifter" target the zygomatic muscles. As these muscles strengthen and enlarge, they can fill out the mid-face, giving the appearance of higher, more defined cheekbones.
