Indian stand-up comedian and content creator Aishwarya Mohanraj recently opened up about her weight-loss journey, revealing that Mounjaro played a central role in helping her shed over 20 kg in six months.

Her story, shared in a YouTube video, drew widespread attention both for the results and for her honest take on the challenges she faced during the weight loss journey.

Aishwarya attributed much of the gain to underlying health issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism, conditions that can make weight loss especially difficult.

Along with these physical challenges were mental-health struggles, particularly clinical depression, which made staying consistent with fitness efforts hard.

She tried various ways to shed the excess weight through diets, daily exercise, drinking plenty of water, and even hitting 10,000 steps per day. While this helped with inch loss, it did not help her much with weight management. An injury, diagnosed as plantar fasciitis, forced her to rest, which slowed her progress further.

What happened next:

After consulting with her doctor, Aishwarya began a weekly course of Mounjaro (generic name tirzepatide), a prescription injectable originally developed for type 2 diabetes but also approved for chronic weight management. Over six months on the medication, she reported a substantial drop in weight, roughly from 74 kg to about 52 kg.

However, Aishwarya spoke openly about side effects she endured, including nausea, significant appetite suppression, and noticeable hair loss. She also advised viewers to consult qualified doctors before considering any such medication.

Can it be used as a shortcut or cosmetic drug?

Dr Manan Vora, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports doctor, who posts explainer videos on social media, explained about the drug.

Mounjaro, a weekly injectable medicine, was originally developed for type 2 diabetes. However, experts soon noticed that the people who were administered the drugs lost a significant amount of weight.

Dr Vora explains that the drug works 2 hunger related hormones. It slows down digestion, reduces appetite and helps you feel full with small portions. That means fewer cravings and better blood sugar control. But it is not a shortcut or cosmetic weight loss drug.

He goes on to stress that it should be taken under proper medical guidance and does not replace nutrition, exercise, or lifestyle changes.
