Few years back, Bollywood actress opened up about melasma, which started a conversation about the skin condition.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin condition that causes light brown, dark brown and/or blue-gray patches on your skin to appear on the face, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. While it is harmless, melasma can be emotionally distressing, especially because it tends to be chronic and visible.
As per the Cleveland Clinic, melasma is sometimes called the 'mask of pregnancy'' because it frequently affects pregnant women. The typically darkens and lightens over time, often getting worse in the summer and better in the winter.
What causes melasma?
Mayo clinic explains that the most common trigger for melasma is ultraviolet light from sun exposure. The condition may also develop as a result of hormone changes due to pregnancy or certain medications, such as oral contraceptives. Research has also found that blue light emitted from light bulbs, computer screens and other electronic devices can worsen melasma. Genetic component of this disorder, too, cannot be ruled out.

In India, melasma is particularly common due to higher sun exposure and naturally higher melanin levels in the skin. Despite this, it is often mistaken for tanning or poor skincare, leading to delayed treatment and frustration.
Actor and author Twinkle Khanna, through her experience brought attention to melasma and encouraged to normalise conversations around pigmentary disorders. Her candid admission challenged unrealistic beauty standards and highlighted how even those in the public eye deal with chronic skin concerns.
Treatment for melasma requires patience and consistency. Dermatologists may prescribe various treatment options based on the condition of the individual.
