Rajasthan officials were prompted to ban 22 batches of a generic cough syrup after multiple children reportedly died after consuming the drug.
An inquiry has also been ordered after receiving several complaints of children falling ill post consumption of the drug, reported PTI.
"Our drug inspector has collected samples from Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Bharatpur, and the test reports are expected within three days. The syrup should not be administered to children below five years of age," said Drug Controller Ajay Phatak.
According to media reports, at least 2 children died and several kids are hospitalised after falling sick over the last two days. It has also been reported that the syrup was distributed through government health centres.

A team of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has collected water and entomological drug samples from hospitals and other sites in Rajasthan as well as Madhya Pradesh, where multiple children succumbed to kidney failure after drinking the cough syrup.
The media house Independent reported that at least 14 children under 15 have died since early September, with most of the cases reported from Nagpur in Maharashtra state and Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh.
According to officials, over 1.33 lakh bottles of the syrup have been distributed in the state since July.
