With over 150 people infected with Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), health officials in Karnataka have advised caution to those living in and around forest belts. Most number of cases were being reported in Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru. So far, KFD has claimed two lives in Karnataka.

What is Kyasanur Forest Disease?

Kyasanur Forest Disease, also known as monkey fever, is a tick-borne viral disease that primarily affects people living in or near forest areas. The disease was first detected in 1957 in the Kyasanur forest of Karnataka. The virus exists in forest ecosystems among small animals including monkeys.

The infection is transmitted to humans when they come in contact with any infected animal or through the bite of hard ticks. However, human-to-human transmission is not observed.

The disease has a fatality rate ranging from 3 per cent to 15 per cent.

What are its symptoms?

According to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), sudden onset of chills, fever, and headache are the common symptoms of KFD. In severe cases, muscle pain, vomiting, bleeding manifestations and gastro-related issues occur. It can also cause seizures and loss of consciousness.

People infected with KFD usually show symptoms within 3-8 days.

CDC has classified southern states in India including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala as higher risk areas for getting KFD.

The infection spreads mainly during the dry season from November to June.

Prevention

1. Using insect repellent to prevent tick bites

2. Avoid contact with dead or sick animals, particularly monkeys.

3. Getting vaccinated

4. Performing frequent tick checks after travelling in forested zones

The health officials have launched public awareness campaigns and distributions of protective gear in an effort to contain the spread of the disease in Karnataka. The officials have asked the residents in the high-risk areas to adopt preventive measures and seek immediate medical care if symptoms develop.
