How to shield mothers, newborns from summer heat

Summer's hot temperature can create multiple health problems for the mother and the newborn baby. In the initial few weeks of the birth of a newborn, regulating the temperature and taking precautions beyond the normal are crucial. 

Heat can impact overall health and well-being. Newborns are especially vulnerable to changes in temperature because their bodies cannot manage heat like adults. Below are a few tips that must be followed to keep mothers and their newborns cool, hydrated, and safe throughout the hot summer season.

Ways to keep mothers, and newborns safe throughout summer 

1. Stay hydrated: Maintaining hydration can help avoid heat-related conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke in both mother and infant. Mothers should drink plenty of water throughout the day, as it helps in recovery, milk production and preventing dehydration. 

For newborns, breast milk provides sufficient hydration as it contains water (in large quantities). Newborn babies under six months shouldn’t be given anything other than breast milk unless advised by the doctor. 

2. Keep the environment cool: Stay in a well-ventilated room with fans or an air conditioner, wherever possible. A shaded & cool place is perfect for mother & baby. Apply a wet washcloth on the baby's forehead, as it can also assist in controlling the baby's temperature in hot weather.

Also, using light curtains can help block out harsh sunlight and keep indoor spaces cooler.

3. Wear loose-fitted clothes: Mothers and their babies must wear light, loose-fitted cotton clothes. Also, putting multiple layers or overdressing a newborn can cause overheating. A single layer of cloth is enough for babies to stay indoors. 

4. Avoid sun exposure: Sun exposure at peak hours between 11 am-4:00 pm can be unfavourable for both the mother and her baby. To prevent this, wearing hats, and sunglasses are advisable when stepping out. If required, take a walk early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature is relatively cooler. 

5. Timely monitoring temperature: It is important to monitor a newborn's body temperature closely. The indicators of overheating in infants can be flushed cheeks, increased breathing rate, and a rise in body temperature. In mothers, symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, excessive sweating, or nausea may signal heat exhaustion. If any of these signs are visible, it is advisable to move to a cooler place. If the temperature persists, consulting a doctor is advisable.  

Keeping mothers and newborns safe during the summer heat requires careful attention. The right preventive measures can ensure a healthy and happy health in summer for both.
