One sip, a hundred memes: Virat Kohli’s reaction to a mid-game drink during the India vs New Zealand final ODI series in Indore got the internet talking. The video showed Kohli drinking a shot-like liquid during the match.

The Indian star batter’s reaction after taking a sip sparked widespread curiosity across social media, leaving fans speculating about the moment.

What was the drink Virat Kohli was drinking?

The internet was rife with speculations about the drink. Some users said it was 'Rum', while others claimed it was an energy drink.

Another user said that it was a pickle juice shot that is generally consumed by players to avoid muscle cramps.

What is pickle juice?

The acidic liquid is a concentrated source of electrolytes, containing sodium and potassium. Compared to drinking water, this helps stop cramping 40 per cent faster.

It is also said that the juice works by disrupting 'neural signalling'- triggering a reflex in the mouth which sends a signal to stop muscles from cramping.

However, there is no evidence to suggest that drinking the juice before a sports event would have any benefit.

Experts suggest that the drink should be taken at the onset of the cramp for the effect. "Rather than drinking it, you need to rinse it in your mouth for 20 to 30 seconds. That's when the vinegar and salt start to act, then you can spit it out", Mayur Ranchordas, a professor of sports nutrition and exercise at Sheffield Hallam University, was quoted by the BBC.

Ranchordas points out that the mistake many sportsmen make is to rinse their mouth with water to get rid of the taste.

Will eating a lot of pickles work?

It is the concentration of electrolytes combined with the fluid that works. Eating a lot of pickles might actually be uncomfortable on the stomach, and it is not practical.
