Seasonal flu cases in the United States have reached their highest level in 15 years, with even influenza-related deaths being reported. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "seasonal influenza activity remains elevated and continues to increase across the country."

In most states, flu levels are categorized as either "very high" or "high." Last week alone, more than 48,000 people were hospitalized due to influenza—the highest number recorded since the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009.

Lab results collected by the CDC indicate that 31% of tests conducted in a single week were positive for influenza, a sharp rise compared to the 18% recorded at the peak of last year’s flu season.

Additionally, around 2% of all deaths nationwide have been attributed to influenza. Overall, the CDC estimates that this flu season has resulted in 24 million illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths across the country.

Symptoms of Influenza

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The main symptoms of influenza flu include:

1. Fever

2. Cough

3. Sore throat

4. Muscle aches and pains

5. Headaches

6. Fatigue

7. Vomiting and diarrhea

In severe cases, serious complications including heart inflammation, encephalitis, and even multi-organ failure could occur.

Prevention of seasonal flu

According to the CDC, the best way to prevent the seasonal flu is through vaccination. Generally, the practices adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic would come in handy in the case of flu season.

Everyday actions to prevent the spread of the disease include:

1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick

2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze

3. Wearing a mask in public places is advisable

4. Improve air quality at home through proper ventilation. Cleaner air can reduce the risk of virus exposure.
