Ashwin Sanghi, ''one of the unhealthiest people on the planet'' was pleasantly surprised and almost shocked when Dr Mukesh Batra approached him with a proposal for a self help book on health and wellness.

Over a khichdi meal, the duo decided to go ahead with it.

The book 13 Steps to Bloody Good Health has been a life changing experience for both the authors— Batra who practised what he preached has lost 13 kg in the last two years while Sanghi has lost 21 kg and looks unrecognisable.

13 Steps to Bloody Good Health represents a happy combination of ancient wisdom and modern science. It can be a go-to guide for anyone who wants to get healthy, fit and happy.

The chapter on how to make your body more alkaline had me hooked. I run, jog, bend my knees and flex my hips to stay fit, but never knew about how to maintain a balanced pH. The book offers insights on how to achieve a better acid-alkaline balance. ''Lots of the foods that we have including coffee, alcohol, meat are acidic. Dal is also acidic. If you take one portion of dal, you must have two portions of vegetables,'' says Batra, a homeopath with over 45 years experience. Oil-pulling is also good for alkalising the body, he says. '' Take one tablespoon of cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil and swish it in your mouth for ten minutes and spit out.'' Maintaining a balanced pH will help you keep certain types of cancer, nervous ailments, bone and joint deterioration and digestive problems at bay. You can get your pH level tested using strips available in medical stores.

The book also offers ways to sleep, breathe and love better.
