At best, it was an outlandish suggestion. At worst, it was very callous. BJP MP Hema Malini suggested that overpopulation and overcrowding were the reasons for incidents like the Mumbai fire, claiming that a limit should be placed on the number of people in a city to avoid tragedies. 14 deaths were the result of the inferno.
"The population is too high and the city is expanding at a huge rate. Population shoule be restricted, with a limit for each city. If the limit is exceeded, let people go to another city," she said.
The incident injured 21 people, started after 12.30 am in the '1 Above' pub on the terrace, and spread to Mojo pub on the third floor one level below.
Twitterati were not happy by the comments and expressed it in as many words.
