Interestingly, it's the second Mammootty film with the same title. The first was his 1980s film, directed by K.G. George, where he played the second lead, a motorcycle stunt performer at a circus, with the main lead being the late Reghu. However, the new film, styled as "Mammoottyude Mela" (Mammootty's Mela), has no connection to the former.

The movie is billed as a massive mass action-comedy entertainer. The first-look poster features Mammootty in a black shirt and black mundu while holding a machete.  Filming began in late July 2026 and is currently progressing.

The film is directed by Nithish Sahadev, who made his debut with the Basil Joseph-fronted comedy "Falimy", which was a solid hit at the box office. Interestingly, "Mela" is scripted by Nitish and Anuraj O.B., who collaborated on Nithish's second film, the Tamil runaway hit "Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil" (TTT), starring Jiiva.

"Mela" will be distributed by Dulquer Salmaan's Wayfarer Films. Vishnu Vijay ("Bethlehem Kudumba Unit") is the composer, while Jimshi Khalid("Thallumaala") handles the cinematography.

Nitish being at the helm of this project brings much promise since he is known for delivering big numbers at the box office for films made on a modest budget. "Falimy" made around ₹15 crores worldwide. It fetched strong praise from family audiences and critics, with its humour and emotional core highlighted.

"Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil" (TTT) proved to be a major comeback for actor Jiiva and served as Nithish Sahadev's successful Tamil directorial debut. With a budget of ₹10 crore, it grossed ₹40 crore worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Notably, despite being a Tamil film, it was described as a grounded, "Malayalam-esque" comedy-drama filled with natural humour.
