“Chumbak,” the new multi-generational comedy series from the creators of “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai” and “Khichdi” (Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia), will premiere on August 28. The series is set in a contemporary urban neighbourhood where the lives of five neighbouring families intersect through everyday celebrations, misunderstandings and shared moments of chaos.
Netflix introduced the series with the message: “Chumbak Colony Society Notice! Padosiyon se milne ka waqt aa raha hai.” The post offers a glimpse into the world of Chumbak, where neighbours become deeply involved in one another's lives, turning even the smallest incidents into community-wide affairs.
Set in a modern residential society, the series follows five families whose daily interactions, family functions, personal crises and neighbourhood gossip often spiral into humorous situations. The story centres on community life and the relationships that develop when celebrations, disagreements and unexpected problems are rarely confined to a single household.
The ensemble cast includes Neena Gupta, Deven Bhojani, Arjun Bijlani, Helly Shah, Manasi Parekh, Sumeet Vyas, Sandeepa Dhar, Sumeet Raghavan, Anant V. Joshi, Amyra Dastur, Delnaaz Irani and Atul Kumar. Together, they play a mix of unofficial problem-solvers, enthusiastic advice-givers, accidental troublemakers and neighbourhood gossip enthusiasts who transform ordinary moments into memorable ones.
The series marks the latest collaboration between writer-director and co-producer Aatish Kapadia and producer-showrunner JD Majethia, the creative duo behind two of Indian television's most enduring family comedies, “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai” and “Khichdi”. Kapadia has written, directed and co-produced “Chumbak”, while Majethia serves as producer and showrunner.
In an official statement, Kapadia and Majethia said “Chumbak” celebrates “the beautiful chaos of nostalgic neighbourhoods where no one needs an invitation to drop by, and neighbours slowly become family.” They added that comedy has always been their preferred way of telling stories about people and relationships, and that partnering with Netflix has enabled them to take their signature brand of family comedy to audiences in India and around the world.
The duo also said they hope “Chumbak” brings families together across generations through shared laughter. “We hope viewers laugh with these characters, revel in their chaos, and leave with a smile after every episode," they said.
Blending humour with everyday family dynamics, “Chumbak” returns to the familiar territory that has defined Kapadia and Majethia's work for years, while placing it in a contemporary urban setting.
