Sharing an Instagram post on Wednesday, the makers of Dada - The Sourav Ganguly story revealed the first look of the film on Sourav Ganguly's 54th birthday. Rajkummar Rao wished the cricketer a happy birthday in the caption, calling him "our dearest Dada."
Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and starring Rajkummar Rao, Dada is all set to be released in theatres on May 14, 2027. Tanya Maniktala plays the role of the criketer's wife Dona Ganguly and Aparajita Adhya portrays his mother. The film will follow Ganguly's journey with the Indian cricket team.
The unveiled poster recreates Ganguly's iconic moment, where he was spotted on the Lord's Balcony agressively waving his shirt after winning the India vs England game in 2002 for the Natwest trophy. The poster reads "He didn't just play the game, he changed it." while the title Dada appears in a blue font at the top.
Resharing the image, Ganguly called it the "Best Birthday Gift Ever" and expressed his excitement in Rajkummar Rao playing the cricketer's role on screen.
However, the poster is receiving mixed reactions from the internet. Some fans are disappointed about the first look, mentioning that the image looked cheap and how the film deserves a better poster. Online comments also note that the Dada looks like a "cartoon avatar", while some others critcise casting Rajkummar Rao for the cricketer's role.
"Not good enough. Chatgpt would have done a better job," an instagram user commented.
But supporters remain enthusiastic, wishing Ganguly a happy birthday and sharing their eagerness in waiting for the final movie.
Sourav Ganguly is affectionately known as Dada, which translates to elder brother in Bengali, reflecting his bold and protective leadership style as the captain of the Indian cricket team. Ganguly was part of the Indian Cricket Team from 1992 to 2008 and has played over 113 Tests and 311 One Day Internationals.
