For a while, Vikram Bhatt's "Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past" was ahead of the other concurrent releases, including Imtiaz Ali's "Main Vaapas Aaunga", which was expected to do better. However, on Day 6 (first Wednesday), a trend reversal happened as the former's collection dropped to Rs 1.40 crore and the latter's surged to Rs 1.75 crore (the highest since its first Sunday collection of Rs 2.5 crore, and more than Day 5's Rs 1.65 crore).
Sacnilk-tracked data registered a 6.1% growth, from 2,056 shows. Worldwide, it has earned a total of Rs 18.73 crore, including the cumulative Rs 6.75 crore overseas gross so far. Domestically, the gross has totalled Rs 11.98 crore and the net collections Rs 10.05 crore so far.
However, the big-budget film (est. Rs 70 crore) will need to perform at a much stronger pace to cover the production costs. As of now, the strong word-of-mouth is seemingly working in its favour, naturally reflected in the aforementioned earnings.
Meanwhile, "Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past", which was made on an estimated Rs 15 crore budget, has already crossed that number in worldwide gross, which caught many by surprise. Despite having no major star faces, "Echoes" emerged as the surprise box office winner, beating "Main Vaapas Aaunga" in terms of opening-weekend performance.
A multi-generational love story set against the backdrop of the Partition, "Main Vaapas Aaunga" features a stellar ensemble led by Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari. It features music by AR Rahman.
