When Malayalam movie Mollywood Times went under the scanner of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the makers submitted a version where expletives were muted. However, when the film was screened in theatres, the audience were forced to listen to the cuss words as the producers failed to mute them.

The CBFC has initiated action against the makers, saying it will issue a notice to the producer after collecting evidence, according to Manorama News. The offence could land the producer in prison for up to three years, as per the Cinematograph Act, 1952. The producer might also have to pay up to ₹10 lakh fine.

Directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak, the Naslen K. Gafoor starrer was cleared by the CBFC with a UA13+ (or U/A) certification. This means Mollywood Times is deemed suitable for general viewing , but contains mature themes that require parental guidance for children under 13.

An official statement from the censor board is awaited. The CBFC has not clarified whether Mollywood Times will have to undergo re-certification or whether the movie will be given an A certificate, considering the violation.

Film Producers Association President B. Rakesh said the body has not received any complaints regarding the censoring of Mollywood Times, reports Manorama News.

Mollywood Times has grossed ₹16.17 crore worldwide in its first week. It collected ₹7.44 crore in Kerala box office alone.

The dark comedy, following the journey of an aspiring filmmaker trying to make a horror film, has received positive reviews and praise for its humour and fresh take.
