HBO has unveiled the first glimpse of the upcoming third season of "House of the Dragon", aside from confirming the official release date.
The eight-episode third chapter will premiere on Sunday, June 21, 2026 on HBO and begin streaming on HBO Max. In India, it is expected to premiere on JioHotstar around the same release window. New episodes will release weekly on Sundays, with the season finale set for August 9, 2026.
The team had recently unveiled the trailer to a packed audience at the CCXP event in Mexico. In a video message, showrunner Ryan Condal teased that it's the "biggest" of what they've done so far. “This is a huge season. It’s the biggest we’ve made by any margin and by a wide measure. It is dark. It’s funny. It’s action-packed. It’s emotional. And, of course, it has lots and lots of dragons. This season demanded the very best of everybody that collaborated to make it together, and I can’t wait for the world to experience it.”
Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen.
Condal had already confirmed that the series will conclude with Season 4.
The third season picks up immediately after the Season 2 finale cliffhangers, transitioning from political games to all out war. A massive naval clash, teased at the end of Season 2, is confirmed to be a major early centerpiece in the new season.
The footage also hint at Rhaenyra’s attempt to retake the Iron Throne following Alicent's secret offer to open the gates of the Red Keep.
Aemond Targaryen now sits on the Iron Throne in King's Landing, though his mother, Alicent, considers him a "monster".
Returning cast members include Matt Smith (Daemon), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra), Olivia Cooke (Alicent), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond), and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II).
New additions are James Norton as Lord Ormund Hightower, Tommy Flanagan as Lord Roderick Dustin (leader of the Winter Wolves), Dan Fogler as Ser Torrhen Manderly, and Annie Shapero as Alysanne Blackwood.
