After a year-long gap, Rajkummar Rao-starrer "Toaster" is set to begin streaming on Netflix. The dark comedy thriller, which was announced last year in April, was expected to be released by the end of 2025, but was pushed to an official April 15 date.
"Toaster" is produced by Rajkummar Rao and his actor-wife Patralekhaa. Sanya Malhotra plays the female lead in the film, which also features Archana Puran Singh, Abhishek Banerjee, Farah Khan, and Upendra Limaye.
Directed by Vivek Das Chaudhary, the film has Rao playing a miserly man who becomes obsessed with reclaiming a Rs 5,000 toaster he had gifted to a couple, after their wedding is called off. What starts as a petty mission quickly spirals into chaos involving a murder investigation and city-wide mayhem.
The screenplay comes from Akshat Ghildial, Anagh Mukherjee, and Parveez Shaikh. Editor Chandrashekhar Prajapati ("Madras Cafe", "Sardar Uddham", "Vicky Donor") worked on the film. Jishnu Bhattacharjee, who shot "Stree 2", "Bhediya", "Pari", "Ajji", and "Mardaani 2", is the director of photography.
In an official statement, the team said: “This film tells a quirky, layered story that masterfully blends humour, chaos, and unexpected twists. With a talented cast, including Sanya Malhotra, Abhishekh Bannerjee, Upendra Limaye, Seema Pahwa, Jitendra Joshi, and Archana Puran Singh, the narrative navigates a complex web of secrets and surprises — all centred around a seemingly ordinary toaster.”
Before making his directorial debut with "Toaster", Vivek Das Chaudhary worked as a second unit director on the Raj & DK series "Guns & Gulaabs" and as an ad filmmaker.
