After 29 years, the sequel to the blockbuster film Border is set to arrive. The sequel, Border 2, is slated to release in theatres on this Friday (January 23) for the Republic Day weekend. With Republic Day (January 26) falling on Monday, it gives every chance for the film to generate a massive opening at the box office.

On Monday (January 19), the advance booking for Border 2 opened across India. In fact, select screens in the country even opened ticket sales at midnight or in the eary hours of the morning. The result everywhere is an excellent initial trend with fantastic pace in the advance booking.

The major ticketing platform BookMyShow has already sold 20,000 tickets while the national multiplex chains have already raced past the 10,000 mark. These are brilliant initial numbers and it must also be noted that Border 2 isn't necessarily a film that will depend a lot on advance booking alone.

Sunny Deol is arguably among the biggest stars of his era and commands immense mass appeal even today in the single screens and non-urban areas of India. His films often see a plethora of spot booking and walk-ins. The other notable star in the film is Varun Dhawan although he has been going through a very lean period in recent years.

Dhawan's appeal is mostly to urban cities but clearly, this film is being driven by Deol and the Border nostalgia. The film's teaser and trailer have gotten polarised views on social media. Judging from the internet reactions, it seemed like the hype might be less but like always, the ground reality needn't reciprocate social media trends.

The huge start to the advance booking tells us that Border 2 has great hype and should take a massive opening. It is too early to put an estimate on the opening day but Rs 35-40 crore nett seems to be a marker for the film. Border 2 also features Diljit Dosanjh and debutant Ahan Shetty in key roles.
