The new releases at the Kerala box office are understandably the main choices of viewers this weekend. While Prithviraj Sukumaran's Vilaayath Budha is the much bigger film in terms of scale and screencount, it is Sandeep Pradeep's Eko that is set to win this box office clash.
On expected likes, Vilaayath Budha took a strong opening although the figures were still underwhelming with the kind of wide release that the film got. Nevertheless, Rs 1.80 crore gross was a decent start for the film. Meanwhile, Eko also managed an appreciable opening day, grossing Rs 73 lakh which is neat figure for a low-profile film that doesn't boast of any conventional entertainment formula.
On Saturday (November 22), the roles have reversed with Eko enduring a mind-boggling jump from its opening day. The Dinjith Ayyathan-directorial clocked Rs 1.75 crore gross on its second day, a 250 percent rise from the opening day numbers. Meanwhile, Vilaayath Budha has taken a big fall, grossing just Rs 96 lakh due to weak word-of-mouth.
On its third day, Eko's advance booking alone is equal to the opening day gross of the film in Kerala, hinting at an easy Rs 2 crore day for the thriller. In fact, it could go much higher too. Meanwhile, Vilaayath Budha's advances are sinking and it could struggle to go around Rs 80-90 lakh for Sunday.
Pranav Mohanlal's Dies Irae is nearing the end of its theatrical run and has grossed approximately Rs 37.50 crore in Kerala. The film's global collections are around Rs 82 crore and for an A-rated horror film, these are highly impressive numbers. It is a certified blockbuster.
The trends clearly suggest a long strong run for Eko while Vilaayath Budha is likely to crash on the weekdays. The other new releases, Mask and Mastii 4 are virtual non-starters.
