Rajinikanth's latest release Coolie has completed its theatrical run and recently had its OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video last week. The Lokesh Kanagaraj-directorial managed to end with a worldwide gross of Rs 503.50 crore but the overall performance of the film across the globe was extremely underwhelming. It ends as the fourth-highest grosser in Kollywood history worldwide, behind 2.0, Leo and Jailer. The action thriller released on 14th August 2025 to largely mixed reviews with the fans and pundits terming it as the weakest of Kanagaraj's films, both in terms of the screenplay and characterisation.
Coolie had an ensemble of reputed actors from other industries - notably Nagarjuna from Tollywood, Upendra from Sandalwood, Soubin Shahir from Mollywood and Aamir Khan from Bollywood. Add to this, there was a Kollywood veteran in Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan as the leading female protagonist alongside Sandalwood's Rachita Ram. Despite such a mammoth star cast headlined by Rajinikanth, Coolie failed to become the spectacle that it was expected to be, resulting in extreme underperformance at the box office. The film, however, did open to a record-breaking global weekend due to Rajinikanth's starpower and the hype around his association with Kanagaraj. After the extended four-day weekend, the film lost steam drastically and crawled its way towards the finish line.

In Tamil Nadu, the film ended with Rs 144.40 crore, making it the second-highest grosser of the year in the state, behind Ajith Kumar's mass entertainer Good Bad Ugly. As reported earlier on this website during the first week of Coolie, its trends suggested that it may struggle to become the top yearly grosser in the state and that is how it has panned out. Good Bad Ugly's final Tamil Nadu collection is Rs 148.50 crore and it was a blockbuster in terms of return-on-investment.
In Kerala, Coolie crashed right after the opening weekend with the trend across those four days also being very underwhelming. The weekdays saw a massive dip in collections and the second week was effectively a no-contest as it was game over for the flick. The film ended with a gross of approximately Rs 25 crore in the state and will be a loss-making venture for the distributors.
Andhra Pradesh-Telangana and Karnataka were the best-performing regions for Coolie, both in terms of numbers but again, high costs meant that the film didn't turn out to be a certified success. In AP/TS, Coolie grossed Rs 67.50 crore while in Karnataka, the collections ended at around Rs 41.05 crore. Meanwhile, its Hindi version managed to amass Rs 46 crore gross, making it the second-highest Kollywood dubbed film in Hindi.
Overseas, the film made merry and finished with $20.35 million at the end of its theatrical run. It is only the fifth film to go past the $20 million mark but the collections did drop after the first week, much like it did elsewhere. However, the dip wasn't as extravagant as it was in India.
