Well, this would be the second Netflix show starring Holt McCallany to get the short end of the stick after Mindhunter. The Kevin Williamson-created show, which also stars Maria Bello, Jake Weary, and Melissa Benoist, won't be getting a new season, according to a report in Deadline. It has only been two months since the eight-episode first season premiered on the platform.
Since it's Netflix, it doesn't come as a surprise. Cancelling shows that viewers have just gotten into, and even started enjoying, has been a habit for the streamer, much to the annoyance of loyal subscribers. A while back, they dropped plans to go ahead with the season 2 of 1899 (from the makers of 'Dark') and the Indian series Kaala Pani.
The report mentions that The Waterfront was doing well on Netflix's Top 10 lists, beginning in its premiere week and continuting to remain at the top of the charts for five weeks, with a better performance than the shows Pulse and The Residence.
According to the Deadline report, "Netflix executives typically lean into performance vs. cost, with other factors, like awards recognition, social media buzz and the type of audience tuning in, also taken into account. In addition to number of views, performance includes completion rate, which is not made public. Sources close to the production told Deadline earlier this month that the rate for The Waterfront was good. I hear that Netflix didn’t feel that the viewership and the completion rate were high enough to secure a renewal."
The Waterfront is a fictionalised account of real-events in Williamson's own family and the things he saw during his childhood. The crime-centric show is about a fishing family forced to partake in an illegal business operation to stay afloat.
