It's been two months since Naslen-starrer Alappuzha Gymkhana released in theatres. The Khalid Rahman directorial will be having its OTT release on SonyLIV on June 13, and will be available for streaming in the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages.
The confirmed streaming date comes after a brief confusion among netizens following false information about its digital release the previous week began circulating.
A coming-of-age drama and sports drama rolled into one, the film won over audiences across age groups with its simple, relatable, and fun-packed moments with well-crafted boxing sequences and endearing characters. The cast included a group of newcomers and popular faces, such as Naslen, Lukman Avaran, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Sandeep Pradeep, Anagha Ravi, Franco Francis, Baby Jean, Shiva Hariharan, Kottayam Nazeer and others.
In its review of the film, THE WEEK wrote: "Khalid Rahman's Alappuzha Gymkhana takes on boxing, but later on makes it quite evident that it's not interested in following conventions. You would think that just because it has a familiar (and audience favourite) face as the supposedly "central" character, you're supposed to root for this person. But Khalid has other plans. He takes the familiar, be it in the case of actors or the usual sports drama templates, and gives them a fresh spin. In some places he doesn't give us what we want (in a good way, that is) and in others, he gives us exactly what we wished for."
Khalid Rahman, known for the films Anuraga Karikkin Vellam, Unda, and Thallumala, worked with his brother and cinematographer Jimshi Khalid on the film, and co-wrote the script with Sreeni Saseendran, with dialogues by Ratheesh Ravi. Vishnu Vijay composed the music and the late Nishadh Yusuf edited it.
Prior to Alappuzha Gymkhana, Naslen was part of the hits Premalu, Jo and Jo, Super Sharanya and Thanneer Mathan Dinangal.
