"Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked." Twenty years ago, on most weekends, we religiously flocked to that one neighbourhood TV that tuned into Nickelodeon, as the show began with these words that formed one of the most iconic introductions in showbiz...

Two decades have passed since some of us discovered one of the most defining animated series of our generation on our TV screens—Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Fast forward to 2025, and Nickelodeon Animation President Ramsey Naito announced the new animated series Avatar: Seven Havens from showrunner-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The 26-episode 2D animated series is set in the same world as Avatar: The Last Airbender, which forms many of our core childhood memories. "Seven Havens will be set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. When a young earthbender discovers that she is the new Avatar, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins," announced Dante Basco, who voiced Prince Zuko in The Last Airbender.

Basco, along with Janet Varney, who voices Korra in Avatar: The Legend of Korra, also hosts the award-winning official rewatch podcast Avatar: Braving the Elements, with its season 4 on the way.

As Basco and Varney announced the new season of their podcast, they also introduced Seven Havens.

"Seven Havens will be set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. When a young earthbender discovers that she is the new Avatar, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins," the voice actors said.

Avatar: Seven Havens follows a young Earthbender after the age of Korra. However, in this era, being the Avatar means that she is branded as humanity’s destroyer, not its saviour. Therefore, she is hunted by both human and spirit enemies. The official synopsis states that she, along with her long-lost twin, "must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse".

"Wow! I wonder what the last Avatar did to cause that..." Varney quipped, referring to her character Korra.

Nickelodeon Animation in Burbank will be producing the series, which comprises Book 1 and Book 2, with 13 half-hour episodes each. The premiere date and details of the cast are yet to be announced.

The latest announcement came as part of Nickelodeon celebrating the milestone 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Apart from Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, Nickelodeon has slated the release of a bunch of exclusive content, including games and experiences on Paramount, new videos of the latest Avatar Legends YouTube channel, short originals such as the 10-episode Avatar: Chibi Minis and a seven-episode Avatar Legends: Battlegrounds game on Roblox.
