Over two years after HBO launched the first season of zombie apocalypse thriller The Last of Us, the network has announced the arrival of the second season of the hit TV show. Fans will have to hold on only for a couple more months as the series will debut on HBO and its streaming service Max on April 13.

Based on the adventure video game franchise created by Naughty Boy for PlayStation, the show will see returning cast Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley, along with new faces Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, and Ariela Barer.

Season one of The Last of Us followed Pascal’s Joel entrusted with transporting young Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who is immune to the virus that plagued the world. The season concluded with Joel rescuing Ellie after learning that to create a cure for the virus, she would have to sacrifice herself. Unable to comprehend losing someone close to him after the death of his daughter, Joel prioritises Ellie over the fate of humanity.

Season two will pick up five years after the events of the initial season. The official synopsis reads: “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”

The second season will be based on the video game The Last of Us Part II, which features the entry of key character Abby, played by Kaitlyn Denver. Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann the show promises an action-packed journey, with an even deeper exploration of Joel and Ellie’s relationship.
