JioHotstar has officially launched! The new streaming platform results from a merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The announcement was made on Friday morning by JioStar, which is also a recently formed joint venture of Viacom18 and Star India.

Those with an existing subscription to either or both platforms will be greeted with a pop-up when they open the application, stating: “Limitless Entertainment. One Destination. Enjoy more cricket, more sports and even more entertainment with the world of JioCinema, now available on JioHotstar.” The user will then be swiftly transferred to JioHotstar.

With JioCinema, known for its live coverage of sports like cricket (ICC, IPL, WPL, among others), football (La Liga, Bundesliga, Premier League among others), and other events like hockey, Wimbledon, merging with Disney+ Hotstar, another major entertainment streaming platform in the country, JioHotstar is expected to emerge as a dominant force in the Indian OTT space.
The platform will also feature content from major international studios like Disney, NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros., Discovery HBO, and Paramount. For now, the platform will be free to view with advertisements. According to the press release, the platform boasts of close to 3 lakh hours of entertainment, and more than 50 crore users, though it remains unclear whether this includes individuals who previously subscribed to both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar.

What does the new subscription plan look like?
There are three subscription plans available:
MOBILE PLAN – For access on a single mobile device, the subscription costs Rs 149 for three months or Rs 499 for a year. This plan will include ads.
SUPER PLAN – Available to use on any two devices, the three-month plan will cost Rs 299, while the subscription for a year will come up to Rs 899. This plan will also include ads.
PREMIUM PLAN – Allows access on up to any four devices, with a price of Rs 499 for three months or Rs 1,499 for a year. This plan is ads-free.
JioHotstar: What about existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers?
The existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers will continue with their current plans without any changes
While the plan remains similar to the previous app's model, those with a Premium subscription – which previously cost Rs 399 for three months – will be transferred to JioHotstar Premium without any additional payment for the remaining duration of the plan.
