The Kerala High Court, on Thursday, observed that the language used in the critically acclaimed Malayalam movie, Churuli, directed by auteur Lijo Jose Pellisery, is 'atrocious in nature'. The oral remark by Justice N. Nagaresh came after a portion of the movie was played in the court following a writ petition filed by a lawyer, Peggy Fen.

Churuli was released on the OTT platform SonyLiv.

The court, which admitted the petition filed through lawyers C.A. Anoop and Krishna R., issued notices to the director, actor Joju George and the Censor Board in this regard.

According to LiveLaw, the petitioner claimed that even though the movie is "capable of invoking a sense of curiosity and mystery in the minds of the audience, there is an overdose of foul language. It contains obscene and filthy languages which are opposed to public morality and tranquility."

The petitioner pointed out that the words used in the movie are not used by common people in public or in private, and claimed that some of the words and phrases in the film amounts to outraging the modesty of women and children.

"More than exposure to this type of filthy language and explicit content, children especially teenagers could emulate deviant behaviour," the petitioner said.

The court was urged to issue an order to take down the movie from the platform immediately.

It is to be noted that Churuli is an 'A' rated movie.
