Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has come out in support of Shilpa Shetty who has been facing social media harassment after her husband Raj Kaushal was arrested in the porn film racket case. Mehta, in a series of tweets, urged people to leave her alone and let the law take its due course. He also slammed celebrities for their silence.
He wrote: "If you cannot stand up for her at least leave Shilpa Shetty alone and let the law decide? Allow her some dignity and privacy. It is unfortunate that people in public life ultimately are left to fend for themselves and are proclaimed guilty even before justice is meted out."
In another tweet, he took a dig at celebs and their silence. He wrote: “This silence is a pattern. In good times everybody parties together. In bad times there is deafening silence. There is isolation. No matter what the ultimate truth the damage is already done." He further said: "This vilification is a pattern. If the allegations are against a film person there is a rush to invade privacy, to pass sweeping judgement, to character-assassinate, to fill 'news' with trashy gossip - all at the cost of individuals and their dignity. This is the cost of silence."
The Bombay High Court, on Friday, noted that passing a blanket gag order on the media against reporting anything against Shilpa, shall have a chilling effect on the freedom of press and said there is a judicial limit on what can be construed as good or bad journalism. The court was hearing a suit filed by Shilpa against alleged defamatory articles published against her and family after the arrest of her husband on July 19.
