Even as the agriculture department officials in various states and people have been carrying out operations to destroy swarms of locusts by spraying insecticides, former Bollywood actor Zaira Wasim posted a verse from Quran about locust attacks on Twitter.

“So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood: Signs openly self explained: but they were steeped in arrogance- a people given to sin” -Qur’an 7:133,” the actor tweeted.

The tweet seemed to suggest that the locust attacks that the country is facing is due to the arrogance of the people. It attracted much criticism, with people pointing out to the actor that the tweet was in bad taste.

There were also a few users who defended her. “Nothing is wrong in this tweet she wrote it right, all things happen only with permission of God whether it’s a punishment or etc he can kill or do any miracle, he can do anything he wants cause it’s not our world it’s his, we are here just for some years not forever," wrote one user.

However, in the face of mounting criticism, Zaira Wasim deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

According to news agency IANS, people have also commented on her Facebook page over her decision to quote Quran in the wake of locust attacks. "Lady you must have taken into account of those people of JK, Kerala and elsewhere who are also suffering from the virus. Moreover the crops which are damaged by locust had no name as to who will consume them. In this hours of crisis please post something which is positive and reflects your education,” wrote one user.

“So according to you, with all due respect every year on the same time period, allah send locust to India to destroy the crops of poor farmers who are not even involve in the industrial rise, who don't use vehicle to destroy the nature, and allah send locust only to harm the poor farmers nd not the rich one who actually destroy nature,” wrote another user.
